Art without borders – Jaguar Parade NYC 2022 and the democratization of art

Creativity is an essential part of the human spirit. The search for the new is one of the many forces defining our humanity. On our journey, we inspire and are inspired by what surrounds us. Precisely because we are not oblivious to the existence, it makes sense to think those good things are even better when they are shared.

In this sense, it is legitimate to wish that art has no borders. It is one of the reasons for the existence of events such as the Jaguar Parade, held by Artery. The event’s main objective is to create awareness and raise funds to conserve jaguars, the largest cat in the Americas.

Even so, perhaps one of the significant differentials of this event (and others produced by our team) is precisely the search for artistic interventions that are inclusive, democratic, and comprehensive.

This year, we wanted to share the relevant wildlife conservation discussion with as many people as possible. Check out how we made this dream a reality below!

Street Art

It is not uncommon for one of the biggest barriers between art and the public to be precisely the walls of an insurmountable museum. A portion of people may interpret specific artistic manifestations as elitist or academicist.

Therefore, Jaguar Parade goes precisely the opposite: the exhibition is free, open-air, and for everyone. The places where jaguar sculptures are displayed show this well: parks, malls, tourist attractions, and other easily accessible places.

Brazilian Artists

In addition to an urban art bias, another extremely vital point for the existence of the Jaguar Parade was to serve as a platform for several Brazilian artists. Since biomes such as the Pantanal and the Amazon are established in Brazilian territory, we wanted to emphasize national creations and creators who understand more deeply the importance of conserving our beloved jaguars.

Sao Paulo and New York

A good artist knows that no element exists for nothing in a work of art. Knowing this, we also had to be highly intentional in choosing the host cities for the Jaguar Parade 2022 edition.

Thus, SP and NYC were chosen because they are very similar to the idea of the jungle: extremely rich and diverse in many ways. Want a better place than these for our giant jaguars?

We also had very clear expectations regarding our message’s impact in two megalopolises that are so relevant worldwide. And that’s exactly what happened: our sculptures were seen by millions of people from different backgrounds, age groups, and nationalities.

The jaguar conservation agenda is vital to humanity, and knowing that these highly significant works of art have impacted so many people is undoubtedly a source of pride.

Accessibility

In the challenge of bringing our exhibition to everyone, we soon understood that accessibility would be essential and indispensable. For this reason, all of our jaguar sculptures have descriptive plaques in Portuguese and English versions.

The signs also came in Braille and enlarged font to facilitate access for people who are blind or have low vision. We also prioritized the placement of sculptures for exhibition in places with easy access for people with disabilities.

For all ages

Access to art should also not have age restrictions. From an early age, exposing children to human creations in their most varied formats is interesting. With that in mind, we created the comic book “Jaggie in the Jungle,” which explains the Jaguar Parade and the jaguar conservation agenda playfully. In addition, the material contains activities that stimulate the creativity and curiosity of children.

National and international partners

To have so much good to say about the 2022 edition of Jaguar Parade is incredible. We are also very moved to know that, during this journey, we have been able to count on the support of many brands, entities, and organizations. For this reason, we leave as a way of thanking you, a list of the companies that were pivotal for this year’s event:

Through art, we can teach and learn. A sculpture, a film, a painting, or a play are all vehicles with which we can speak.

With Jaguar Parade NYC 2022, we teach and learn a lot, and we certainly feel heard by taking such a relevant message to those who stopped on the streets (and on the networks) to see our works. Our roar has been heard!
